Write Your Best Speech – Week One

Write Your Best Speech – Week One

Call #1 – Wed April 3rd – 10am PDTpp week 4Week ThreeWeek Two

Download the MP3 HERE

The first week is all about how to research and start developing your power presentation.

Here is what you should have a look at before our first call:

1. Watch “Anatomy of a Speech” (about 30 min). I cover: terminology, where speaking engagements come from, the parts of the speech, what’s important, and more.

2. Watch “Create your Speech Pt1” (about 30 min). I cover: research, templates, a process for writing, how to deliver a lesson, and more.

Please take notes and send questions to me for the our call hugh@hughculver.com. This will really help you and all of us. Thanks

Exercises:

3. Make a list of the presentations you have now, the length, and main lessons.

4. List the changes you know you need to make to the presentation

5. List the new presentations you need to create. For example, you might know you need a really great 15 min. presentation that introduces audiences to your work. Or you might need a new presentation that focussed on a new book you have or new lessons you want to teach.

6. Create your inventory of “parts” in evernote. I have many “notebooks” in evernote to keep all of the content more organized (e.g. “goals”, “web site”, “speaking notes”, etc.). Within the notebook for “speaking notes” I have “stories”, “quotes”, “good one lines”, “humour”, “keynote setup” (A/V set up), “models”, etc. Go wild!

PREWORK

This week we are going to learn about the speaking industry and prepare to create
your first speech.

WHAT TO WATCH

Please watch the following video:

YOUR WORK

Sign in or get an (free) account on www.evernote.com and start building your inventory of materials for your speech (and all future speeches).

For each item below, create a new note and label it (for example) “Opening statement” and then create your list in the body of the note.

Don’t worry if you don’t have a list for all of these, but create the note as a reminder for future additions (see image in handouts and below).

Build your resource inventory

  • Opening statements/stories/claims etc.
  • Story inventory (we go over stories more in week 2, but this is a good time to start collecting your stories in one place)
  • Humor inventory (these could be stories, one-liners, jokes)
  • Lessons inventory (these could be for different speeches)
  • Third-party research (statistics, facts, research)
  • Quotations inventory
  • Interactive games/experiences (this list could include dyads (two-person) exercises, standing exercises)
  • “Phrases that pay” (short summaries of your lesson that people will remember)
  • Case studies (clients you have worked with)
  • Video clips (list these in evernote)
  • Images for PowerPoint/Keynote (list these in evernote)
  • Closing messages/quotes/statements/stories etc.
